Etan Patz disappeared in NYC in 1979
|
| - |
THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2012 - (Time) - NEW YORK CITY - Police have arrested a 51-year-old New Jersey man who earlier implicated himself in the 1979 disap- pearance of Etan Patz, a case that baffled New York City for decades, sparked a nationwide campaign on behalf of missing children and helped make Patz the first child whose picture was posted on the side of a milk carton.
NEW YORK POLICE Commissioner Ray Kelly told a press conference late on Thursday that Pedro Hernandez lured the six-year-old into the small grocery where he worked with a can of soda, then strangled him to death. Kelly said police began to close in on Hernandez thanks to an unnamed tipster who came forward following press coverage of the ex- cavation of a basement nearby in a re- newed search for clues to Etan’s dis- appearance.
PROSECUTORS charged Hernandez with second degree murder.

PAKISTANI DR PROSECUTION IS 'WRONG'!
|
| - |
THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2012 - (India Today) - WASHINGTON - The 33-year jail term to a Pakistani doctor who helped CIA in finding Osama bin Laden has created outrage in the US with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calling it "unjust and un- warranted" and a Senate panel voting to cut aid to Islamabad.
"WE ARE RAISING it and we will continue to do so because we think that his treatment is unjust and unwarranted," Clinton told reporters during a joint press conference with the visiting New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully.
"WE are in the midst of a series of discussions with the Pakistani Govern- ment on a range of issues that are important to the US and the international community. We certainly consider the treatment of Dr Afridi to be among those important issues," she said.
Clinton said the US does not believe there was any basis for holding Afridi guilty.

THE BOOKLET, which was distributed to "business colleagues" in the publishing industry, includes a brief biography of Obama among the biographies of eighty-nine other authors represented by Acton & Dystel.
IT also promotes Obama's anticipated first book, Journeys in Black and White--which Obama abandoned, later publishing Dreams from My Father instead.

NO DOOMSDAY HINT IN OLDEST MAYAN CALENDAR
|
SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2012 - (Times of India) - LONDON - The oldest Mayan Calendar found in an ancient Guatemalan house offers no hint of the alleged end of the world December 21 this year, researchers said. The walls reveal the oldest known astronomical tables from the Maya. Scientists already knew they must have been keeping such records at that time, but until now the oldest known examples dated from about 600 years later. Astronomical records were key to the Mayan calendar, which has got traction because of doomsday warnings predicting the end of life in December 2012. Experts say it makes no such prediction. The new finding provides a bit of backup: The calculations include a time span longer than 6,000 years, meaning it could extend well beyond 2012, the journal Science reports.
