US MILITARY TO CUT ALMOST 100,000 TROOPS

THURSDAY, JAN. 26, 2011 - (B B C) - WASHINGTON - The US will cut almost 100,000 troops as part of its plans for a "smaller, leaner" military, Defence Secre- tary Leon Panetta has announced.
UNVEILING A RESTRUCTURE of the armed forces, Mr Panetta said the US would boost special forces and retain the ability to defeat "any enemy on land".
THE Pentagon is facing cuts of $487B (£310bn) over the next 10 years.
In five years, the Army will drop from a peak of 570,000 to 490,000, and the marines be cut by 20,000, to 182,000.

NASA FINDS 26 NEW PLANETS

THURSDAY, JAN. 26, 2011 - (NY Daily News) - SAN DIEGO - The known universe just got a little bigger.
SCIENTIST'S AT NASA's planet-hunting Kepler mission announced the discovery of 26 planets in 11 differet solar systems on Thursday, Reuters reports.
THE announcement brings the number of confirmed planets to 729, with another 2,300 possible planets floating around out there.

  NORTH KOREA CELEBRATES "GENIUS OF GENIUSES"

MONDAY, JAN.9, 2011 - (Deutsche-Welle) - PYONGYANG - On the day he is believed to have turned 29, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been hailed in the state media as a military 'genius,' but there has been no official celebration of his birthday.
NORTH KOREAN television has broadcast a documentary showing Kim Jong Un and his late father Kim Jong Il taking part in military operations.
IT praised the new leader as "a genius among geniuses" on the day that was also thought to be his birthday.
