Northridge Earthquake
of January 17, 1994
AT 4:30 AM some 10 million plus people in the greater Los Angeles region of southern California were awakened by the shaking.

The earthquake, as named for its epicenter in Northridge,
was a magnitude 6.7 shock that proved to be the most costly earthquake in the history of the United States.

The economic cost was high with losses estimated at $20 billion. This major quake severely tested building codes, earthquake- resistant construction methods, and emergency preparedness.

Indian Ocean Tsunami
of December 26, 2004
AT 1 AM UTC an earthquake on a magnatude of 9+ occurred in an undersea region near Indonesia.

The resulting waves devastated the shores of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South India, Thailand and other countries with waves up to 30 m (100 ft). It caused serious damage and deaths as far as the east coast of Africa, with the furthest record- ed death due to the tsunami occur- ring at Port Elizabeth in South Africa, 8,000 km (5,000 mi) away.

Approximately 275,000 people were killed, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history.
